PEA POWER AT WORK
Our products are based on yellow split peas, which are rich in proteins, contain a range of essential amino acids and, because of the way we use them, they give our products a low glycaemic index – great for avoiding those sugar spikes! Below you can read about the main nutritional benefits of our plant-based products. You can also find nutritional information for individual products HERE.
CARBOHYDRATES AND SUGARS
FROM ZERO TO NOT-TOO-SWEET
ZERO SUGAR
Let’s start at zero, which is where all our products begin since our pea base contains no carbohydrates or sugars; So, Sproud Unsweetened has zero sugar, low carbs, no added sweeteners, but is still high in protein.
A TOUCH OF SWEETNESS
Sometimes, though, you want a touch of sweetness. So, for Sproud Barista and Sproud Original, we add agave syrup to enhance the flavour. This natural sweetener has a lower glycaemic index than traditional sugars, meaning it has a less significant impact on blood sugar levels. In other words, it has a bit of sweetness with a relatively small sugar spike.
SWEET (BUT NOT TOO SWEET)
And then there are times when you want a little more sweetness (but not too much). Sproud Chocolate combines sugar and agave, with 4.9 grams per 100 millilitres. We sweeten Sproud Vanilla and Sproud Iced Coffee using only sugar, with 3.7 grams and 4.9 grams per 100 millilitres, respectively.
CERTIFIED LOW SUGAR
You don’t just have to take our word for it; Sproud products are certified by Sugarwise, the international authority that guarantees any sugar-related claim has been independently verified and that a product is comparatively low in any of the sugars or sweeteners people need to limit in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.
STILL NOT AS SWEET AS THE OTHERS
But get this: all Sproud products, even those with added sweeteners, have a lower sugar content than the average regular dairy milk, with Sproud Chocolate having about the same sugar content typically found in conventional cow’s milk. We also aim to offer options with significantly lower sugar content than other plant-based products on the European market. In fact, Sproud Vanilla and Sproud Iced Coffee have sugar levels 30-60% lower than many comparable alternatives.
PROTEINS
CHOOSE YOUR PEA POWER
Split peas are a great source of protein. Our products have varying quantities of protein, which we label clearly on the packet so you can choose a higher protein option if that’s what you’re after.
HIGH IN PROTEIN
In the EU, this label signals that a minimum of 20% of the energy value of these products is derived from protein (some up to 30%). This is the case for Sproud Unsweetened, Sproud Barista, and Sproud Original. Perfect if you’re looking to boost your protein intake.
SOURCE OF PROTEIN
This indicates that at least 12% (with some products up to 17%) of the energy value of these products is derived from protein. This includes Sproud Vanilla, Sproud Chocolate and Sproud Iced Coffee.
FATS AND OILS
MAKING IT CREAMY, KEEPING IT NUTRITIOUS
Our products use rapeseed oil (also known as non-GMO canola oil in North America), which constitutes the main fat content and helps create a creamy consistency. We are very particular about the oil we source to ensure it maintains its inherent health benefits.
GENTLY PROCESSED
We use rapeseed oil from southern Sweden, close to our manufacturing site, which is grown according to EU legislation and the stricter pesticide guidelines of the FEDIOL code of practice. In Canada, we use non-GMO-certified rapeseed oil.
Rapeseed oil is naturally rich in unsaturated fatty acids (88%), including oleic acid and linoleic acid, which are essential for a healthy diet and have been shown to provide numerous health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease. We use oil that has been pressed and deodorisation, which is a gentle form of processing that helps maintain the goodness and maintain a neutral taste in the product.
VITAMINS AND MINERALS
GET YOUR DAILY DOSE
We enrich all our products, except for iced coffee, with essential vitamins and calcium (apart from in Australia). This ensures you get the vital nutrients as part of a healthy daily diet, regardless of dietary restrictions or preferences.
Here’s what we add:
CALCIUM
Calcium helps form and maintain healthy bones and teeth. It also has an essential role in blood coagulation and regulating nerve functions. If the body does not get enough calcium, it takes it from the bones, so it’s important to get enough in your diet.
RIBOFLAVIN
Riboflavin (or B2) helps break down carbohydrates, fat, proteins and purines. Vegetarians and vegans may need to drink plant-based alternatives enriched with riboflavin.
VITAMIN D
Vitamin D regulates the calcium balance of bones and teeth, but very few foods are good sources of vitamin D. Enrichment of some foods with vitamin D has significantly helped to eradicate the vitamin D deficiency-related disease, rickets.
VITAMIN B12
Vitamin B12 is required, among other things, for cell metabolism and the formation of blood cells. It also has an important function in the nervous system. B12 deficiency only usually occurs in vegetarians/vegans, so it’s vital that they consume products enriched with Vitamin B12.
